For Authors
Submit ManuscriptThe Florida Journal of International Law accepts a wide variety of scholarship on issues of international law. For submissions intended for our forthcoming Spring 2026 Symposium Issue on the law of defensive uses of force, we require that authors adhere to the following guidelines:-
Spring 2026 Symposium Issue
Article Topics
Articles should focus on obligations under International Law when contemplating uses of force or responding to them. The Journal is especially interested in submissions that navigate state responsibility towards aggressors, third parties, and targets of retaliatory force.
Article Length
Submissions must be in Microsoft Word format and must be between 10,000 words and 25,000 words, including footnotes.
Citations
Citations must be in the form of Footnotes, not Endnotes, and must conform to the standards specified in the 21st edition of the Bluebook.
Submission and Communication
Manuscripts submitted via Scholastica, our google form, or those emailed to fjilsymposium@law.ufl.edu will be considered for publication in the Spring 2026 Symposium Issue. All manuscripts must be accompanied by a resume/CV but those submitted via Scholastica should also be accompanied by a cover letter specifying the author’s interest in consideration for publication in the Symposium Issue specifically. All Symposium-related communications, including those pertinent to publication, will be conducted through fjilsymposium@law.ufl.edu.
Deadlines
The Journal will consider any conforming submission that it receives by November 8, 2025.
General Submissions
For any non-Symposium submissions, we recommend that authors consider these general guidelines when submitting:-
Article Topics
The Journal only publishes articles that address issues of international law. We do not accept articles whose primary focus is foreign, domestic, or comparative law. Although articles may include discussion of those issues, the article should primarily address an international legal issue (e.g., ICL; IHL; IHRL; Int’l Investment Arbitration, etc.). We are particularly interested in submissions that take innovative approaches to timely issues.
Article Length
The Journal expects most articles to be between 20,000 and 35,000 words, including footnotes. Although we are happy to consider articles that are slightly outside of that range, as a general rule, we do not consider submissions with less than 15,000 words unless as noted for special editions.
Citations
As a scholarly publication, the Journal pays particular attention to the quantity and quality of the support given for an author’s argument. We expect submissions to conform to the rules of citation set out in The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (21st ed. 2020), and although we have no specific requirements, we recommend an approximate ratio of 2:1 for above-the-line text to below-the-line citations. The Journal also looks at the quality of the citations and expects a mix of secondary and primary source material.
Timing
The Journal publishes multiple issues a year. While we accept submissions year-round, our schedule reflects the fact that we are full-time J.D. students at Florida Law. Accordingly, we typically select our articles during two periods: from December to February, and from June to August.
How to Submit
The Journal only accepts submissions through the Scholastica online submission system. Please ensure that you have included a copy of your CV or resume with your article submission.
Please note, due to the very high volume of submissions we receive, we can only respond to authors whose scholarship we are considering for publication. Please note that we do not accept article submissions from current students outside of University of Florida - Levin College of Law. If you have received a time-sensitive offer of publication from another journal, please submit a request for expedited review on Scholastica.
